They did two shows that day/evening. I recall in the middle of the show, that Kim Mitchell's voice bit the dust on him and they had to take a lengthy break. When they came back, it was somewhat better, but they wound up doing a few songs that I had never heard live before.

Glass half full that it was a good thing Kim lost his voice. We saw two concerts in the same evening and they had to change their set in the second show because of the voice issues. We got to see to different shows rather than the second being a repeat of the first.

Part way through Kim Mitchell says they were going to take a short break, and away they went for 20 minutes or so. His vocals had started poorly and just got progressively worse - very limited range and rough - and by break time he was visibly frustrated with how bad his voice had become.

Lorne Wheaton said, 'Terry Brown wants to see you out in the back.' So I walked out the back door, over top of the cabling, down into the parking lot behind the theatre, and walked into the recording truck and sat down. He was first getting wind that Kim wasn't able to sing. He said, 'Can you listen to this playback?' And he turned it on and I said, 'If it was up to me I would put it on louder.' He said, 'What would you make louder?' I said, 'The vocals.' He thought there was something wrong with the mic, and he was just going to get that fixed, and then he realized it was Kim. He said, 'Oh, that's going to be an issue because Kim can't sing tonight, so Terry's going to have to sing for him.' I thought, that's kind of weird. You're a professional engineer and you're asking me? You're the one making the mix. I said, 'How come Terry didn't tell me that? I just walked past him.' He said, 'Terry's not going to say anything, because they don't want anybody in the hall to get mad that Kim's not singing. And Kim didn't want anybody to be upset with him because he wasn't singing, because he was sick.

They should've cancelled that recording. They shouldn't have paid for the truck to come all the way from Toronto, because Kim already knew he was sick at ten o'clock in the morning. But I think Kim was trying to prove a point about live recordings, that he didn't want to do it and that it wasn't a good time. And he was going to show everybody that it wasn't a good time. And he did that. So Terry had to carry the night, two shows. And then we went back to the Valhalla Inn, and Kim disappeared back to Toronto and then reappeared in the morning. I think he was trying to stamp his feet and say no, I'm not doing this. Kim sat on a bench seat by himself, and Pye sat behind him. Usually they sat together.
