Max Webster regularly played venues like this one, and soon became one of the biggest bands on the Toronto bar scene.
Bassist Mike Tilka has stated that Battle Scar was the first original song the band played live. They rehearsed it one afternoon, and it was spontaneously played at the Gasworks that evening. Tilka adds that the song didn't have the bass riff yet, and was more guitar driven.
The song was considered for the first couple albums, and eventually forgotten until they attempted recording it in 1979 (this version is heard on the bootleg disc of "The Party" box set). Rush heard them play it at a soundcheck in early 1980, which soon led the two bands to jam the song together at a soundcheck, and ultimately record it with both bands in the same room.
